The Monkey Mindset: How Open Thinking, AI, and Purpose-Driven Growth Are Shaping the Future of Business
What does it take to grow a business from hundreds of thousands to millions in turnover in today’s fast-moving world? According to Richard Wood, CEO of Rocketeer Enterprise, it’s not just strategy or funding that separates high-performers, it’s mindset.
In a recent conversation hosted by Dr Jamie Smith of C-Learning, Richard offered a masterclass in modern leadership, innovation, and resilience. Drawing from decades of experience scaling businesses and coaching leaders, he shared why old playbooks no longer work, and what’s replacing them.

Growth Isn’t Always What You Think It Is
“There’s a massive misconception that growth will make life easier,” Richard said. “In truth, your problems don’t disappear; they just evolve. You need new tools and thinking to match each stage.”
He’s right. Too many businesses chase turnover without understanding profit margins or customer lifetime value. “Revenue can be vanity,” Richard warned. “The real power comes from knowing your numbers and how they translate to value.”
One insight that stood out: success is contextual. Whether you’re running a start-up or a 500-person organisation, the definition of high performance varies. But across the board, clarity of direction and a culture of striving for excellence are non-negotiable.
Enter AI: Not Just a Tool, But a Lever
When asked about AI, Richard gets straight to the point. “It’s already changed everything.” From automating sales follow-ups to scraping and analysing competitor data, AI has become a multiplier for entrepreneurial ambition.
He shared how his own business helps companies turning over £200–300k reach £4–5 million, often by leveraging AI-driven workflows across sales, marketing, onboarding, and delivery.
But he issued a caution: “Don’t chase every shiny new tool. Capture your data, know what workflow you want to improve, and choose AI to serve that goal, not the other way round.”
In a world where AI capabilities are doubling in mere months, staying focused is the real competitive edge.

The Monkey Mindset: A Leadership Essential
What keeps some leaders ahead of the curve while others stall? Richard believes it’s the mindset. More specifically, the “monkey mindset”, a term he uses to describe the openness to question everything.
He tells a story about monkeys peeling bananas from the opposite end to humans. “It’s a simple shift in perspective, but it works better. Business is the same, you have to be open to a better way.”
This mindset, paired with hope and resilience, can move mountains. Richard shared a hauntingly powerful analogy of a drowning rat rescued from a tank, which then managed to swim for 60 hours in the belief it might be rescued again. “Hope is a survival strategy,” he said. “In business, it’s what keeps you solving, striving, adapting.”
Culture: Built Quietly, Protected Deliberately
Despite often working with smaller firms, Richard understands the value of culture. “It’s the informal sum of how everyone shows up every day. Lead by example. Hire people better than you. Let that raise your game.”
He echoed a sentiment that many founders shy away from: don’t be the smartest person in the room. “If you’re always the expert, your business is capped by your own limits.”
Failure, Reframed
When the conversation turned to failure, Richard didn’t flinch. “It’s all a science experiment. You try something, you learn. That’s it.” He spoke about the Post-it note, an accidental invention that became iconic, and told the parable of a farmer whose misfortunes turned out to be blessings in disguise.
“Don’t get too high when it’s good or too low when it’s not,” he advised. “Just keep focusing on what you can control, how you treat people, the value you deliver, and whether your business model works.”
The Future Belongs to the Curious
Richard closed with a mantra: “Interest leads to passion, passion leads to purpose.” It’s a grounded philosophy that matches the spirit of his leadership, helping others by first being deeply curious about what makes them tick.
Whether you’re building a startup, leading transformation, or figuring out how AI fits into your world, Richard’s advice is refreshingly practical: stay curious, stay hopeful, and above all, stay open.
