Leeds City College Empowers Adult Learners with Innovative STEM 7 Challenge Series
Over the past few months, Aleks House from Leeds City College, in collaboration with a dedicated group of Google Innovators, has spearheaded a transformative 7-week, challenge-based project across the Adult, Community, and ESOL (ACE) department at Leeds City College. The STEM 7 Challenge Series skillfully integrated Google Classroom, Gemini, and ChatGPT to empower ESOL and Adult and Community learners, fostering significant growth not only in their language proficiency but also in crucial digital confidence, employability skills, and real-world problem-solving abilities.
The challenges, focused on seven future-ready skills – Problem Solving, Creative Thinking, Communication, Data Thinking, Flexibility, Curiosity, and Collaboration – provided a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Leveraging the versatility of Google tools, the project ensured a scalable and inclusive approach, where each student benefited from personalized AI-supported feedback. This deeply human-centered methodology allowed learners to receive tailored guidance, enhancing their understanding and progress.
The impact has been profound, with participants demonstrating increased confidence in communicating with potential employers, navigating AI tools effectively, and approaching learning with greater independence. This initiative underscores the college’s commitment to embedding essential skills directly within the curriculum, moving beyond traditional, isolated modules to create a more holistic and relevant educational experience.

Building on this success, Leeds City College is set to further innovate in the 2024/25 academic year with the introduction of Curriculum Designer AI assistants and flexible learning tasks supported by Gemini prompts. This commitment to continuous improvement and the impactful integration of technology has also garnered positive recognition in a recent Ofsted report.
