Leading with Purpose: Insights from Safeguarding Expert Trudie McGuinness
Author – Dr Jamie Farnell-Smith
In a world that often demands rigidity and conformity from its leaders, Trudie McGuinness stands as a beacon of compassionate determination, challenging traditional notions of leadership and championing a more human-centric approach. Her diverse career, spanning from safeguarding specialist to professional Toastmaster, is unified by core values of connection, compassion, and love. In a recent conversation, Trudie, founder and CEO of The Essential Safeguarding Company, shared profound insights into purposeful leadership, well-being, and the evolving landscape of safeguarding.
The Evolution of a Safeguarding Warrior
Trudie brings extensive experience as a leading safeguarding specialist and practitioner. She began her journey as a child protection officer in 2007, witnessing a significant shift in the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) role. What was once primarily focused on high-level concerns has evolved into a proactive approach, prioritising early intervention to prevent issues from escalating and to provide more effective support to children and young adults.
This demanding role, as Trudie eloquently puts it, requires a “dual nature of compassion and a warrior-like determination”. While approachability and kindness are crucial for disclosures, the DSL also battles for social justice and the best outcomes for vulnerable individuals, often engaging in unseen emotional labour. This unwavering commitment to service and fighting for what is right fuels her purpose.
The “Spark” and the Power of Diverse Experience
Trudie attributes her unique career path, encompassing public service, education, political activism, and coaching, to listening to the “nudge of her heart” and a profound sense of calling. She firmly believes that “personal renewal comes from experiencing different perspectives and engaging in diverse activities”. This philosophy has allowed her to discover her full capabilities and foster innate talents, leading her to become one of the first female Toastmasters, a profession traditionally dominated by men. Her role as a Toastmaster, where she helps wedding guests feel welcomed and facilitates key moments, further underscores her commitment to connection and service.
Nurturing the Nurturers: The Essential Safeguarding Company
Recognising the immense emotional and logistical burden carried by safeguarding professionals, Trudie founded The Essential Safeguarding Company. Her primary motivation was to provide crucial support to these individuals, emphasising the vital importance of safeguarding leads protecting themselves to sustain their demanding work. For Trudie, “joy” is a core corporate value, serving as a powerful counterpoint to the inherent weight of safeguarding work.
Strategies for Well-being in a Demanding World
In a profession that can lead to burnout, Trudie champions proactive well-being strategies. Her personal practices include daily walks, spending time with her pet rabbit, having plants in her office, weekly dancing as an embodiment facilitator, and scheduling a weekly “soft play date” with herself to engage in new experiences and foster creativity. These practices highlight her belief in finding joy and renewal outside of the demanding aspects of her work.
Redefining Leadership: Beyond the “Tough” Facade
Trudie challenges the pervasive misconception that leadership in education and public service necessitates a “tough” exterior and relentless long hours, akin to “pushing a boulder uphill”. Instead, she demonstrates that leadership can be infused with “verve, joy, and humour”. For her, true leadership involves championing others, fostering innovation, and actively supporting people, thereby redefining traditional, static ideas of leadership.
Her political vision, too, is deeply rooted in authenticity. She believes in “remaining true to herself and her core values,” even when faced with pressure to conform or take shortcuts. This means showing up authentically, without compromising kindness or integrity, even if it entails having “tough love” conversations about policy.
A Legacy of Support and Groundedness
When asked about her legacy, Trudie expressed a desire for The Essential Safeguarding Company to establish that DSLs must have supervision and support. She underscores the critical role of coaching, mentoring, and dedicated time for offloading emotional labour. Her advice for remaining grounded amidst significant work and career choices is simple yet profound: “keeping perspective and maintaining great friends and people in one’s life”.
Trudie McGuinness’s journey is a powerful testament to the impact of leading with purpose, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to well-being. Her insights offer a compelling vision for a more authentic and human-centred approach to leadership, inspiring us to listen to the “nudge of our hearts” and redefine what it means to lead effectively in today’s complex world.
